We
mi
a breed of cow called the 'Guernseys produce milk which is very high in protein and butterf
The type of dairy that we use for the cows is called a Rotary (or a rotalac).
This means that 28 cows are on a rotating platform at one time. We milk 120 cows twice a day, at approx 5.30am and 4.00pm. The cows step onto the rotating platform where the cups are put on. The platform takes approx. 11 minutes to go around and then the cups get removed as they walk off.
One person can work the dairy on their own, but it is definitely easier with two people.
The Goats are milked in the same building as the cows, though on a separate platform. The goats platform is stationary and there is 12 goats in one row.
When the row of goats have been milked, the leave via two gates and then the next row of goats come on.
Goats only have two teats where as the cow have four, so we have different milking machines for them. The suction is also quite gentle for the goats.
